Like many writers I participate in literary festivals, libraries and conferences up and down the country. These appearances usual involve reading out small excerpts from a novel, short story or the odd poem, or else taking part in discussion panels. Whatever the event you can be relatively sure that when the audience is invited to ask questions one of those will be a variation on ‘When did you start writing and why?’ It is a question that writers fully expect and for the most part there is no definitive answer.
